Conservation Legislation and Easements

         

The League of Women Voters of Georgetown County has been a leader in conservation causes since its early years, including being the impetus of a landmark State Supreme Court ruling from the 1980s that economic benefit alone is not sufficient reason to allow destruction of natural resources.  That case involved what was then Willbrook Plantation, which we now know as several residential developments and with which we are still entwined in the form of a conservation easement.


The LWVGC holds FOUR CONSERVATION EASEMENTS, some in partnership with other groups, to prevent harm to our natural resources.  Our task is to inspect them annually to insure they are properly maintained.

325 acres of functioning wetlands.  On 05/07/1999, the Willbrook easement which is part of the Reserve Golf Course.  There was improper incursion into a wetland area during construction.  We monitor with the Sierra Club and SC Department of Environmental Services.

0.6 acre of wetlands. On 08/18/1999, we acquired a small easement at the Ricefields subdivision, a wetland that sits behind two yards.  The Department of Environmental Services is our partner in protecting it.

15+ acres creek side.  On 6/17/2013, we obtained this easement of the creek side of South Litchfield beach. (Magnolia Beach).

3.85 acres wetlands. On 07/05/2013, we obtained this easement at Holy Cross Faith Memorial Church.  The Sierra Club is our partner on this site.
