Our History: 44 years of LWV of Georgetown County

 


The League of Women Voters of Georgetown County was founded in 1981 by a few individuals who came together in response to voting rights violations throughout our county.

Past Accomplishments:

-In 1982, our League held the first Georgetown County Candidates Forum.

-Encouraged the State Board Commission to provide poll manager education.

-Advocated for a new Election Commission Chairperson.

-Supported the change for single member districts for County Council.

-In 1984, worked together with the EPA and the local steel mill to address brown air emissions.

-Our League (about 1988) made the New York Times, for leading the efforts to stop Dioxin from being discharged above the median levels at our local paper mill!

-Our League received  "The 1989 Organization Conservation Award" from the Wildlife Federation.
